One key to slashing your golf handicap is your driving. Conventional wisdom encourages golfers to hit accurate drives then go for distance. This approach holds that 220-yard drives in the fairway trump 250-yard drives in deep rough. But some Tour players, including veteran pro golfer Nick Price, favor a different approach. They say learn to hit the ball as far as possible first, address control later. Regardless of what side of the argument you favor, mastering the five golf tips below, will help make you a great driver.

Hit A Draw

Some players like to hit power fades off the tee. Jack Nicklaus did. That might not work for you. Tour players fade the ball differently than a weekend golfer. They use a draw type swing, with the clubhead approaching from inside the line of play instead of swiping across it. This approach increases control, but is difficult to learn. If your fade is costing you yardage, you might be better off hitting a draw. It adds distance to your drives because the clubhead comes into the ball on a shallow, head-on angle, compressing the ball more efficiently. Draws also tend to run when they hit, lengthening out the drive.

Catch It On The Upswing

One key to hitting great drives, we tell golfers in our golf lessons, is catching the ball on the upswing. This adds both carry and distance to the drive. To increase your chances of hitting on the upswing, tee the ball a little higher than normally and position the ball an inch or two farther forward. The ball should be directly below your left pectoral muscle. Another golf tip is to increase your backswing turn. You need a full turn to hit great drives.

Increase Loft

Many of the weekend golfers attending our golf instruction sessions tend to hit their drives more on a line than Tour players. The ball shoots up like a line drive, hangs up at the peak of its trajectory, and then flutters down. This type of ball flight costs you yardage. Instead, try hitting the ball higher. Balls hit with more height continue to fly forward rather than fluttering down. Watch your ball flight next time you go to the driving range. If you see your ball falling abruptly from its peak, find a driver with more loft than your current club, say one with 12 to 15 degrees of loft.

Get A Good Lie

Another tendency we see in our golf instructions sessions is failing to find a good lie in the tee box. Tee boxes aren’t perfect. They may slope in one direction or the other or have a hollow or two. To hit great drives, you must find a level area to hit from. If you tee your ball up in a place where your feet are even a half-inch higher or lower than the ball, you’re asking for trouble because you’re hitting off a side hill lie. Instead, tee up near a ball marker or move back a club length or two. The flatter the spot you hit from, the better.

Play Safe When You Need To

Some golfers in our golf lessons can ramp up their swings on command. But many can’t. It just messes up their swings. Our advice: Avoid trying to carry a bunker or other trouble spot if you can’t carry it with your normal swing. If you have to swing even a little harder than you normally do, then lay-up. If you gamble and lose, you’ll cost yourself a stroke or more. It may also put you into a bad frame of mind for the rest of the round. Also, never aim for a bunker, a water hazard, or other trouble. If the ball goes straight, it costs you. Don’t get penalized for hitting the ball straight.

Mastering these five golf tips helps generate more distance off the tee. Longer drives that hit the fairway mean shorter and easier shots into the green, which increases your chances of hitting more greens in regulation (GIR). Hit more GIRs and you increase your chances of carding more birdies and pars. More birdies and pars slash scores and golf handicaps.

It’s fair to say that most golfers have some idea of which muscles are used during their golf swing but in most cases they probably don’t understand how important the muscles in different parts of the body are in ensuring that they have a consistent, powerful golf swing.

On top of that it’s likely that most golfers don’t really realise that they should be exercising the muscles involved in their golf swing in order to keep them strong and flexible. In fact, if particular attention is not paid to keeping these muscles in good shape then it is highly unlikely that the golfer is going to be able to develop their best possible golf swing and in turn this can make it difficult for a golfer to fully enjoy the game.

A common problem that many golfers face when they don’t perform any kind of exercise designed to target the muscles used in the golf swing is pain in the lower back, usually as a result of long sessions of golf or time spent at the golf driving range practising the same movement over and over again. If you suffer from this type of pain do you think it is even possible for you to go out there and enjoy your golf, especially when you know that once you come of the course your are going to be suffering for your hobby?

The ironic thing is that this type of ailment can be easily solved just be doing some golf specific exercises designed to target the muscles that you use in the golf swing and in particular those in your back. By performing these exercises you will find that you will develop much higher endurance which will have a tremendously positive impact on your golf swing in the future. Not only that, but the exercise you can do to target your back can actually be performed at home or work without the need for expensive gym equipment or training aids.

It’s pretty obvious that the muscles used in the golf swing need to be exercised on a regular basis, with the right golf specific exercises to ensure that they are correctly developed. This will allow them to adjust to changes in your golf swing and perform far more efficiently in the long run allowing you to play better golf round after round.

So take the time to work on all of the muscles utilised by your golf swing and you won’t regret your decision, your golf will become far more enjoyable and you’ll no longer have to live through the pain and suffering of a round of golf again. Find the right golf specific exercise program and work at it as much as you can, your golf swing will thank you for it!

By taking the time to combine a golf exercise program with your basic golf swing training you are likely to see results in your game that could be described as miraculous. When you consider the outstanding performances being put in by up and coming golfers like the Song sisters, Ty Tyron and Michelle Wie you can see that they are seeing some great results in their game through the training methods they are using.

Of course there has been plenty of discussion about why these players are having so much success with their golf swing and the interesting thing is that in many cases the assumptions made as to why they are playing as well as they are are just not true. For example a common belief is that these younger golfers perform better and respond better to golf swing basics taught because of their flexibility and this is simply not the case.

The difference between younger golfers and adults is usually strength and not flexibility. Coaches who have worked with hundreds of junior golfers have watched in amazement as after a very short period of time of doing strength exercises they have seen an improvement in their driving distance of 50 yards or more. However a quick word of caution, using the wrong strength training golf exercise programs can actually damage a golfers golf swing instead of improving their game.

The fact is that simply focusing on training the golf swing without using a golf specific exercise program is not going to improve one’s game as well as combining your golf swing training with an exercise program designed to help you build strength in your golf specific muscles. While you may see some improvement by focusing on your golf swing you will see much larger benefits if you include golf specific exercises into the mix too.

So take the time to work with golf exercises as well as your golf swing and I can guarantee that your golf game will improve in leaps and bounds, and probably far more quickly than you would ever have imagined. By doing so you will find that the improvements that you have made in your golf swing will be far easier to replicate out on the course hole after hole and you will enjoy playing your next rounds far more than before.

One of the ways that a number of golf players have been able to improve their game has been through the process of studying in detail the physics of their golf swing, which includes capturing and analysing the biomechanics of their swing to find areas for improvement.

This mechanical analysis of the motion of your body is known as biomechanics or Motion Capture Technology and using these technologies you are able to get an incredibly clear view of how your golf swing is performing by analysing the outputs of high speed video and other data captured during testing.

It’s not always that easy to find areas of specific problems within your golf swing as it is such as dynamic and quick motion, however if you are able to clearly capture and study the physics of your swing it can make things a lot easier when it comes to finding these small faults, and in turn it can make it much simpler to change your golf swing for the better.

Believe it or not, one of the most effective techniques for fixing flaws with your golf swing is to concentrate on exercises that target the areas used during golf in order to build up strength, flexibility and endurance. By strengthening your muscles it makes it much easier to adapt small changes in your golf swing without suffering from fatigue or falling into bad habits due to tiredness or injury.

It is afterall pretty well accepted that the golf swing is a fairly awkward, complex movement that is quite far from being a natural experience for the body and in order to get it right you need to constantly practise and exercise the muscles that are involved in the process of the golf swing to see real improvements over the long run.

Understanding the physics of the golf swing will allow you to determine how changes will affect the moment of impact and the flight of the ball through the air. By taking the time to focus on this area of your game you are likely to find a number of areas where you can make improvements to your game through refinements to your golf swing, so don’t rule this process out in the future.

On the other hand if your golf swing lacks power and rhythm you will find that your game will suffer. Unfortunately, developing a proper golf swing is something that is absolutely vital when it comes to playing the game of golf, if you aren’t able to learn how to swing a golf club in a consistent, repeatable manner and constantly work on improving yourself you are unlikely to find much enjoyment out on the course.

If you are new to the game of golf then you have probably discovered that you can’t just pick up a club and suddenly discover that you have a great golf swing, in fact it is probably the opposite and it will feel awkward and not at all natural. Developing a proper golf swing is going to take a little bit of time and quite a lot of practise so you must be prepared to put in the time each and every time you swing your golf club to improve and if you do the chances are you will enjoy playing golf more and more over time.

One thing you need to learn to ensure you develop a quality golf swing is that your hands need to work together as one when you are gripping your golf club. If you find yourself with an accurate and smooth swing it is most likely because your hands are working as one during your golf swing rather than fighting against the unnatural position your are putting them in. Although there are a number of ways in which you can grip a golf club, you must find the one that works best for your golf swing and your style of play and if you can do that successfully your hands will work together, making your golfing life that much easier.

As you are trying to discover the right grip to use in your golf swing there are a number of factors that you need to consider and one of the most important is how tightly you are gripping your golf club during your golf swing. One of the most common misconceptions for new golfers is that they must grip their golf club as hard as they can during their golf swing and in fact nearly the opposite is true as this can actually lead to you losing power in your golf swing due to a lack of flexibility. If you learn to grip your club more lightly during your golf swing you will find that you will develop more accuracy and flexibility without losing any of your power. Of course you do need to ensure that you can keep a hold of your club at all times during your golf swing as you can’t afford to let go of your club when you are trying to hit the ball nice and hard, but with some practise you will be able to find the right balance.

Another advantage of using a lighter grip is that you will find yourself getting more club face rotation which gives you a much improved chance of squaring the golf club as it comes in contact with the golf ball and this is a very important aspect of the game of golf so keep that in mind when you are taking your next shot. You should try and develop a grip that is roughly in the middle of your grip strength as this will give you a great chance to see immediate results if you are searching for a quick improvement in your golf swing. This also gives you the most versatility and a high degree of flexibility.

By developing the correct grip you will find that you can quickly and easily improve your golf swing and as a consequence see big improvements in your game next time you are out on the course. And as you know having a good golf swing is the cornerstone of a well rounded golf game that will lead you to enjoy your golf much more in the future.

In order to lower your golf score out on the course you need to put in some time working on your golf swing off the course, after all one of the main reasons that golfers quit the game is that it is pretty challenging. You require a great deal of concentration, skill and physical attributes in order to become a successful master of the golf swing and the game itself so it’s no surprise that if you don’t put in the effort off the course you are unlikely to reap any benefits while you are out there on it.

One of the best ways to improve your golf swing and lower your score out on the course doesn’t actually involve swinging a golf club, buying any kind of ‘latest’ golf training aid or involve actually swinging a golf club at all. What I am talking about is how you can improve your golf swing by working on the one thing that you have complete control over and is unique to you… the “machine” that allows you to produce a consistent, repeatable golf swing for the entire 18 holes. Think about it for a minute, are you currently able to maintain your golf swing for an entire 18 holes without finding yourself tired or losing form, I’d hazard a guess that most people are likely to have answered ‘No’ to that question.

You’ve probably been in this situation yourself, you go to the range and hit ball after ball, you buy the latest golf training aid and the best clubs you can afford, yet you still can’t manage to develop a consistent golf swing that in turn helps you to lower your score to the level at which you want it. Interestingly when you look back at the list of things you have invested in above you will quickly realise that you’ve simply overlooked the one area where you are likely to see the biggest improvement… YOU AND YOUR BODY!

Golf is an athletic movement that requires strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, stability, timing and many other elements. If your body is physically limited…you’ll have a minimal chance at playing to your potential. Just think about the difference you would see if you put 20 minutes into a golf training routine in your home with minimal equipment. No grunting, no groaning, no pain, just simple golf exercises that will make a dramatic, and almost immediate impact on your golf game and score.

I have seen so many “so-called” fitness books and videos that show golfers using machines in a gym. This is not what I’m talking about and this is not golf fitness training. Anytime you sit on a machine that isolates one muscle group, you will not improve your golf swing or your game. What I’m talking about is using hand weights, a stability ball and some exercise tubing with handles which is all very inexpensive and perfect for improving your golf swing. The only catch is you need the right exercises to go along with this affordable equipment.

I’ve heard horror stories of golfers who have lifted weights and said their game got worse which is, of course, a big problem. The reality is you have got to do exercises that will train your body to make a stable, mechanically sound golf swing for 18 holes so finding the right golf swing training program is a must, none of this off the shelf, generic exercise will do for you. The good news however is that there are quality golf swing training programs out the today which will help you to develop the muscles which do the most work without putting you under any undue strain or require you to invest in crazy equipment, so find one today and you will definitely see the benefits in your golf swing.

Take the time to find the right golf exercise program and it will work wonders on your body and consequently your golf swing. Make it a part of your weekly golfing routine and I have no doubt that you will reap the benefits of an improved golf swing out on the course each and every time you play. Get yourself into the habit of performing some golf specific exercises today and your golf swing and scorecard will thank you for it in the long run!

There are a large number of golf training books out there on the market these days, both the physical kind you will find in your local bookstore and an even larger number available online. The key for any of these golf training books in order for them to be at their most effective is that they need to be foolproof and user friendly, basically the average golfer needs to be absolutely clear on what it is they need to be doing to be improving their game. Not only that but the techniques that the golf training book will be showing to the golfer need to be easy to implement without overloading the user with technical jargon or language.

Haven’t you purchased a book (not necessarily a golf training book) before; got excited to dive and; and then in a short period of time felt overwhelmed? I know I certainly have and it’s not a good feeling and to be honest these types of books can leave you even more frustrated than before you purchased them.

I have even seen golf training books that have been thrown together by several “so-called” experts and by the time you’re finished you don’t know where to begin. That’s not to say the information wasn’t credible, but isn’t the whole purpose of reading a book having the ability and confidence to know what to do next to achieve whatever goal you had when you first purchased it, not to be impressed by all the fancy language and information the author knows?

On the other hand, a golf training book that will work for you should have all the components of the golf swing including swing mechanics, biomechanics, strength, flexibility, aerobic, injury and much more. And not only the above information, but in a way that you… the reader can apply immediately without needing to invest in even more things before you can start, like equipment or whatnot.

It would be nice to have step-by-step instructions, illustrations, and even the benefit of each exercise to the golf swing throughout the entire golf training book. I have bought and read a large number of golf training books and been left a little dazed and confused, and not only that in some cases they weren’t even golf training specific, they were just general training books that didn’t really relate to golf at all.

Any good golf training book should also break down every phase of the golf swing and have strength and stretching exercises for each phase and that way you can really dial in to the exact issues you are having with your swing. So, this way the golf training book isn’t only user friendly but it can act as an ongoing resource for you to refer to for many years. Having such a golf training resource like this at your fingertips is invaluable in your pursuit of a better game.

While I could go on about the things any golf training book needs to have in order to be worth your while I am sure you are beginning to get the picture by now. Make sure that when you decide to buy a golf training book you take the time to study it thoroughly first (if possible) and if you are not happy then you should definitely take advantage of any money back offer that the golf training book author is offering should you buy online. Good luck in your search for a quality golf training book, I’m sure with these tips you’ll be in a great position to ensure your next investment is a good one.

In the old days of training for golf it was nearly acceptable to just go to the driving range and simply practise your swing over and over again in order to build up your golf specific muscles, but the reality is this was not an effective golf exercise program then and it certainly doesn’t cut it these days. In fact, following a golf exercise program like that today is only likely to cause you to injure yourself meaning you are not going to be able to get out there and practise the game you know and love, so why take the risk?

These days a good golf exercise program will be far more intelligently designed and the basic objective is to get measurable and noticeable results. A modern golf exercise program will usually involve golf-specific exercises designed to strengthen muscles that are used in the game in order to provide you with the fitness and stamina you need to play your best each and every round.

The modern golf exercise program will also incorporate the use of exercise machines and equipment with the most effective of these seek to build particular muscles and parts of the body that are critical to golf. Stretching exercises are also important in any good golf exercise program, the right stretch exercises, sometimes incorporating the use of dumbbells, can help dramatically improve a golf swing and the distance of your shots out on the course.

And stretching exercises do not have to be limited to the gym or a specific exercise area. There are a number of stretching exercises that can be performed in the office, even while still seated on your chair. These have proven to be especially useful with many amateur golfers who hardly seem able to find the time to play golf, let alone spare a few hours at a crowded gym with all the muscleheads.

Golfers however need to be extremely careful because not every golf exercise program is designed by qualified people and let’s be honest, the wrong golf exercise can be even more harmful than no exercise at all. The ideal situation is to have a golf exercise program that starts off dealing with any particular weaknesses you have and as you see the positive effect the exercises are having on your game, it will then be the perfect incentive for you to stay on the exercise program and your golf training system.

So make sure that you take a modern approach to your golf training system and you are likely to see large improvements in your game out on the course. Use a high quality golf exercise program as part of your weekly golfing routine and you will ensure that you can continue to play golf for many years to come.
